Speech Therapy

Speech therapists treat speech, language and voice disorders. They help people communicate. They also work to improve understanding between the patient and family. Speech therapy includes prevention, identification, evaluation, treatment, education and rehabilitation of communication disorders.

Swallowing Therapy

Speech therapists also treat swallowing problems that interfere with ability to eat, drink and receive proper nutrition. Identification of these problems and follow-up treatment can improve skills and quality of life.

One in ten Americans have a communication disorder. These can affect anyone at any age. Many people benefit from the personally designed speech therapy program our team can provide. Some of the causes of communication disorders are:

Undetected hearing loss
Cleft lip or palate
Head or spine injury
Swallowing problem
Speech and language disorders
Stuttering, poor voice control, articulation problems
The loss of the ability to use or understand words
Results from damage to the nervous system that affects the muscles used in forming speech sounds
Health problems

There are a variety of ways to treat each patient. Our therapists will work with you to design a personal program to help you learn or re-learn communication skills. With education and information we also help families understand speech and language disorders and their treatment.

Evaluation to determine the extent of the disorder and probable cause
Information, education and support for the patient and family
Therapy activities, exercises, games with one on one interaction
Special equipment such as hearing aids, artificial voice aids, or other adaptive devices
Surgery can often correct structural causes such as cleft palate, misaligned teeth or punctured eardrums.
