Contact William Parry, CCC-SLP
I offer a comprehensive new therapy (Valsalva Stuttering Therapy) to stop stuttering blocks by controlling the neurological, physiological and psychological factors that interfere with speech. I provide therapy to ]adults and teens over the Internet by video conferencing. Unlike therapies limited to "acceptance" of stuttering, Valsalva Stuttering Therapy helps to make speech easier, less effortful, and more enjoyable. I believe that most persons who stutter are able to speak normally at least some of the time. Their problem is not a lack of ability to speak, but rather an interference with the inherent ability they already have. Specifically, this interference involves the triggering of stress hormones by the brain's amygdala, resulting in suppression of vowel sounds (which are the loudest part of syllables), and substitution of physical effort in the mouth or larynx. Accordingly, Valsalva Stuttering Therapy does not focus on controlling or changing one's speech, but rather on controlling the forces that interfere with speech,. This frees persons to speak freely in their own natural voice, rather than trying achieve an artificial kind of "fluency" that sounds unnatural and is hard to maintain.
