Education/Training
Dr. Marks has earned doctoral degrees in Communication Disorders and Clinical Audiology. She is also
trained in the Wilson and Orton-Gillingham reading interventions. She began her career intending to work exclusively in research but found herself drawn to the progress that individuals could make with intensive
speech-language, auditory and reading training, and dove into clinical work. She has
immersed herself in clinical practice in hospital, private practice, and public school and university settings. She has piloted a three year study of a reading program and the identification of auditory processing disorders at a high school in Boston, under review for publication. Continuing education is at the core of excellent clinical practice. All of our staff are licensed and board certified specialists in Speech Pathology, Audiology, Occupational Therapy and Special Education.
Bio
Speech-Language and Hearing Associates of Greater Boston, is celebrating its eighteenth year
under the direction of Dr. Maura Marks who is among a small number of professionals certified in both Speech-Pathology and Audiology and has over thirty-five years of professional experience. With offices in Medfield and Plainville,we have grown both in size and scope. Our focus is on all aspects of communication. The auditory modality is essential for speech and language development, reading, speech production, and staying engaged and alert. Oral language and motor deficits can affect behavior, learning, social interaction, and self-esteem. We also believe we have a responsibility to educate the community. For example, we’ve put the word out that tinnitus, or ringing in the ears, can be treated. We’ve also informed parents to keep an eye on youngsters with early speech and language delays. They may appear to catch up to peers around the time of kindergarten screenings, largely because rate of growth slows in normally developing children, until about age six.
