Instead of trying to speak more slowly without any specific direction use 'complete word production' by focusing on the beginnings and, especially, endings of words. 2. Listen actively by taking notes, looking directly at the speaker and reflecting the message. 3. Place a tape recorder by your phone and listen to yourself to pinpoint areas in need of improvement. 4. Greet and depart with enthusiasm and sincerity in both your verbal and body language by giving firm handshakes, smiling and saying more than 'hi' or 'fine'. 5. Keep your voice healthy by staying hydrated with water, and not yelling from your throat but instead projecting from your diaphragm. 6. Occasionally be quiet and practice 'strategic silences' to gain power in conversations. 7. Build your vocabulary weekly by adding 1 new word from something you have read or specifically sought in the dictionary. 8. Leave clearer phone messages by repeating your name and number twice and spelling your name if yours is uncommon, and gain control by scheduling calls at your convenience whenever possible. 9. Improve your answering machine greeting by re-recording it with a smile on your face and clearly enunciated words. 10. Do not be afraid to seek help from a professional if you need it. Dawn Cotter-Jenkins is the principal owner of World Class Speech Services, a speech consulting business, which was established in 2000. Ms Cotter-Jenkins is a New York State licensed Speech-Language Pathologist and her private practice specializes in accent modification and professional speech training. Ms. Cotter-Jenkins started her career teaching speech in New York City public and private schools. She has taught seminars and courses at the State University of New York at Stony Brook,Queensborough Community College and York College. Ms Cotter-Jenkins is currently an adjunct assistant professor at Bronx Community College and CUNY Lehman College. She serves as a current member of the New York State Board of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. She has served on the election board of the Corporate Speech Pathology Network and is a certified member in good standing of the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association and NY State Speech-Language and Hearing Association. DEVOTED. COMMITTED. DISTINGUISHED. Today, she uses innovative speech training methods to ensure a client's personal success. She is driven to find creative ways to recast conventional solutions that accommodate her clients lifestyles. Training techniques incorporate video taping, CD-ROM and web-based programs for speech improvement and accent modification. She was awarded the Caribbean American Chamber of Commerce and Industry "2005 Business Visionary" Award and in April the 2006 Entrepreneur of the Year Award.
