Parkinson’s Disease and other neurological deficits often cause faulty feedback to the brain which can result in communication that is too soft, mumbled, monotone or hoarse. Because of this, patients with Parkinson's Disease can often be difficult to understand. Our LSVT-LOUD treatment teaches Parkinson’s Disease patients techniques to improve their communication ability and perception of appropriate loudness. Dysphagia – Patients with dysphagia have difficulty swallowing and may experience pain while swallowing, making it difficult to eat. Dysphagia is caused by weak muscles in the mouth and throat and is often a result of a stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s disease. Aphasia – Aphasia causes patients to have difficulty reading, speaking, listening and writing. Aphasia is caused by damage to parts of the brain that are responsible for language. Apraxia – Patients with apraxia have difficulty speaking what he/she wants to speak. Apraxia can occur in two forms. Patients can be born with the disorder or it can develop from a stroke or head injury. Dysarthria – Patients with dysarthria may have slurred speech, a slow or rapid rate of speech, abnormal rhythm when speaking or difficulty chewing and swallowing. Dysarthria can develop from a stroke or head injury. Stuttering – Stuttering is a communication disorder that causes difficulty in fluency of speech. This includes involuntary repetitions of words, parts of words or sounds. Stuttering is also referred to as stammering. Dementia – Dementia is related to memory loss. I have over 20 years of experience in working with a variety of speech and language disorders. I have special interests in working with children who have developmental and/or cognitive delays, autism, apraxia and social or pragmatic difficulties. I am fluent in sign language and have been successful with using sign language to facilitate speech in many children that I have treated. I strive to treat each child as an individual and develop treatment goals to support each child's individual needs as well as the needs of the parents. In my treatment of clients, I try to instill confidence and help individuals realize their potential in regards to successful communication. I encourage parents to participate in their child's sessions so that they can help their child carry over techniques and skills to their home environment. I have also met with educators of some of my clients to collaborate on how we can make communication more successful in the classroom. Sign language classes for Moms and their babies are available as well. Current research has shown that when babies are taught sign language at an early age and begin to use these signs to communicate their needs, they realize their ability to control things in their environment. These babies learn cause and effect earlier and are more quickly soothed as they can communicate pain, hunger, fear and things they desire. In addition, as the babies in the study grew and developed, it was discovered that they were out-scoring their peers on academic assessments, intelligence tests and even the SATs. As a child of deaf parents, I also have a special interest in working with children who are hearing impaired. I use ASL when communicating with my parents; however, am also trained in signed English. My speech therapy practice does focus on pediatrics; however, I have extensive experience working with adults as well. I have worked with adults who have suffered strokes and have experience working with individuals who have communication and cognitive difficulties as a result of Traumatic brain injuries. The Coleman Therapy Center (CTC) is a full service therapy center that provides speech and language diagnostics and therapy. CTC therapists provide evaluations and therapy for children, teens and adults with varying disabilities and disorders ranging from apraxia and autism to syndromes and traumatic brain injuries. CTC therapists are trained in a variety of treatment approaches like PROMPT (Hayden), The Listening Program (ABT), and Floortime (Greenspan). CTC is also happy to offer the Lindamood Bell, Wilson and Orton-Gillingham intensive reading programs for struggling readers. Our Therapy Programs include individual therapy, group therapy, reading therapy, social skills groups, fabulous Fridays, NVTRP and CTC camp, hippotherapy and The Listening Program. Individual Therapy: Most of our therapy program consists of either a 30 or 60 minute individual therapy session which follows an individualized treatment plan based on the strengths and needs of your child. Treatment plans are updated frequently to ensure that we are always targeting the appropriate objectives for your child. Group Therapy: Group therapy may be available but depends on family interest. Reading Therapy: CTC is proud to offer the Lindamood Bell LiPs, Seeing Stars and Visualizing/Verbalizing programs. These programs are typically offered in two, three and four hour sessions. Intensive reading therapy offered during school holidays and summer vacations. Social Skills Groups: This group therapy is for children 4-12 years old. The Speech Pathologists at The Coleman Therapy Center will provide social skills instruction using the Michelle Garcia Winner curriculum target adapting to others, how to engage and play with peers, perspective-taking, social language and interaction. Fabulous Fridays for Children with Down Syndrome: During this group therapy summer program the therapist provides three hours of intense instruction for children 4-10 years old with Down Syndrome. NVTRP and CTC Camp: During the summer, the Northern Virginia Therapeutic Riding Program (NVTRP) and The Coleman Therapy Center (CTC) pair up for an unforgettable camp experience, which includes therapeutic horseback riding, group speech therapy, and gross/motor sensory play. Hippotherapy: In this therapy program, the speech-language pathologist uses horseback riding movement to facilitate the physiologic systems that support speech and language. When combined with other standard speech-language intervention strategies, the speech-language pathologist is able generate effective remediation of communication disorders and promote functional communication outcomes.
