The George Washington University Speech & Hearing Center has been serving clients since 1946. The Center provides a full range of speech, language, voice, accent modification and hearing services for individuals with communicative disorders. As an educational facility for graduate students entering the field of speech-language pathology, the Center maintains high standards in its delivery of comprehensive evaluations and therapy. The Center serves persons of all ages. Evaluations and therapy treatments are administered by graduate student clinicians who are supervised by certified Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists. Since this is a teaching center, students and supervisory staff may observe sessions directly or through one-way observation windows. Clients may notify their clinician if they would prefer not to have student observers at a particular session. The state-of-the-art Center has sixteen multifaceted treatment, training rooms and conference rooms, four audiologic quarters dedicated to comprehensive hearing testing, and fitting and programming hearing aids and cochlear implants. There are seven speech-language pathologists and two audiologists on staff supervise the graduate clinicians. Our excellent support staff can assist you in obtaining an appointment with the speech-language pathologists and audiologists. The Speech, Language and Voice portion of the Center operates on a semester basis while the Audiology portion of the Center operates year round. The Audiologists work with numerous brands of hearing aids and amplification products and also participate with the Audient/EPIC hearing aid program. As a University-based Center, we are committed to providing our graduate student clinicians with a variety of disorders that will prepare them for future independence. As a result, in order to properly provide them with a meaningful education, the number of clients per semester is limited. Therefore, acceptance to our program cannot be guaranteed, however placement on a waiting list is available. If accepted into the program, clients are expected to maintain regular and punctual attendance. If frequent absence or tardiness occurs, we reserve the right to dismiss the client from the program. Our Practice, Hearing Partners of South Florida, is an audiology practice offering comprehensive hearing testing including tinnitus and balance assessments. Hearing instruments are a final option not the only option. Currently, we monitor for ototoxicity those patients receiving chemotherapy, radiation treatment and/or intravenous antibiotics. We work with industry to monitor noise induced hearing loss and with pediatricians in identifying hearing loss in the newborn population. We also work with musicians and sound engineers in fitting appropriate musician ear devices. In addition, we work closely with Allergists and E.N.T’s in monitoring eustachian tube dysfunction and other middle and inner ear abnormalities. Dentists refer to us to manage tinnitus patients that suffer from TMJ and neurologists refer patients suffering from vertigo and tinnitus for site-of-lesion testing such as BERS and VNG to rule out retrocochlear involvement. Parkinson’s Disease and other neurological deficits often cause faulty feedback to the brain which can result in communication that is too soft, mumbled, monotone or hoarse. Because of this, patients with Parkinson's Disease can often be difficult to understand. Our LSVT-LOUD treatment teaches Parkinson’s Disease patients techniques to improve their communication ability and perception of appropriate loudness. Dysphagia – Patients with dysphagia have difficulty swallowing and may experience pain while swallowing, making it difficult to eat. Dysphagia is caused by weak muscles in the mouth and throat and is often a result of a stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s disease. Aphasia – Aphasia causes patients to have difficulty reading, speaking, listening and writing. Aphasia is caused by damage to parts of the brain that are responsible for language. Apraxia – Patients with apraxia have difficulty speaking what he/she wants to speak. Apraxia can occur in two forms. Patients can be born with the disorder or it can develop from a stroke or head injury. Dysarthria – Patients with dysarthria may have slurred speech, a slow or rapid rate of speech, abnormal rhythm when speaking or difficulty chewing and swallowing. Dysarthria can develop from a stroke or head injury. Stuttering – Stuttering is a communication disorder that causes difficulty in fluency of speech. This includes involuntary repetitions of words, parts of words or sounds. Stuttering is also referred to as stammering. Dementia – Dementia is related to memory loss. A speech-language pathologist can help patients with dementia by using strategies to help preserve communications and cognitive function.
