Services: ** TELETHERAPY AVAILABLE ** LSVT-LOUD (Speech treatment for Parkinson's Disease patients):We provide evaluation and treatment for Parkinson’s Disease related communication deficits. Parkinson’s Disease and other neurological deficits often cause faulty feedback to the brain which can result in communication that is too soft, mumbled, monotone or hoarse. Because of this, patients with Parkinson's Disease can often be difficult to understand. Our LSVT-LOUD treatment teaches Parkinson’s Disease patients techniques to improve their communication ability and perception of appropriate loudness. Dysphagia – Patients with dysphagia have difficulty swallowing and may experience pain while swallowing, making it difficult to eat. Dysphagia is caused by weak muscles in the mouth and throat and is often a result of a stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s disease. Aphasia – Aphasia causes patients to have difficulty reading, speaking, listening and writing. Aphasia is caused by damage to parts of the brain that are responsible for language. Apraxia – Patients with apraxia have difficulty speaking what he/she wants to speak. Apraxia can occur in two forms. Patients can be born with the disorder or it can develop from a stroke or head injury. Dysarthria – Patients with dysarthria may have slurred speech, a slow or rapid rate of speech, abnormal rhythm when speaking or difficulty chewing and swallowing. Dysarthria can develop from a stroke or head injury. Stuttering – Stuttering is a communication disorder that causes difficulty in fluency of speech. This includes involuntary repetitions of words, parts of words or sounds. Stuttering is also referred to as stammering. Dementia – Dementia is related to memory loss. A speech-language pathologist can help patients with dementia by using strategies to help preserve communications and cognitive function.

Neurofeedback is direct training of brain function, by which the brain learns to function more efficiently. We observe the brain in action from moment to moment. We show that information back to the person. And we reward the brain for changing its own activity to more appropriate patterns. This is a gradual learning process. Renee moved to California to complete her Clinical Fellowship at the San Francisco Hearing and Speech Center. She has practiced for the last 18 years in a variety of settings including: private and public schools, clinics, and as a provider of home-based early intervention services.  Renee enjoys working with children of all ages with a special interest in early intervention (0-3) and in preschool speech, language and literacy development. She is currently pursuing her certification in Orofacial Myology. Speech disorders include: * Articulation disorders: Difficulties producing sounds in syllables or saying words incorrectly to the point that listeners can't understand what's being said. * Phonological disorders: Difficulties in speech sound patterns. * Fluency disorders: Problems such as stuttering, in which the flow of speech is interrupted by abnormal stoppages, repetitions (st-st-stuttering), or prolonging sounds and syllables (ssssstuttering). * Resonance or voice disorders: Problems with the pitch, volume, or quality of the voice that distract listeners from what's being said. * Motor speech disorders such as Apraxia of Speech (AOS): Difficulties saying what is wanted to say correctly and consistently. * Language disorders can be either receptive or expressive: * Receptive disorders: Difficulties understanding or processing language. * Expressive disorders: Difficulty putting words together, limited vocabulary, or inability to use language in a socially appropriate way. I specialize in receptive and expressive language delays, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), and gestalt language processing (communication through scripts/delayed echolalia). I have spent the last half of a decade working with neurodivergent preschool and school-aged children. Through every setting I have worked in, I have encountered the same disappointing commonality. Many neurodivergent children are seen as a problem that needs to be “fixed”.
