Our LSVT-LOUD treatment teaches Parkinson’s Disease patients techniques to improve their communication ability and perception of appropriate loudness. Dysphagia – Patients with dysphagia have difficulty swallowing and may experience pain while swallowing, making it difficult to eat. Dysphagia is caused by weak muscles in the mouth and throat and is often a result of a stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s disease. Aphasia – Aphasia causes patients to have difficulty reading, speaking, listening and writing. Aphasia is caused by damage to parts of the brain that are responsible for language. Apraxia – Patients with apraxia have difficulty speaking what he/she wants to speak. Apraxia can occur in two forms. Patients can be born with the disorder or it can develop from a stroke or head injury. Dysarthria – Patients with dysarthria may have slurred speech, a slow or rapid rate of speech, abnormal rhythm when speaking or difficulty chewing and swallowing. Dysarthria can develop from a stroke or head injury. Stuttering – Stuttering is a communication disorder that causes difficulty in fluency of speech. This includes involuntary repetitions of words, parts of words or sounds. Stuttering is also referred to as stammering. Dementia – Dementia is related to memory loss.
