Specifically, this interference involves the triggering of stress hormones by the brain's amygdala, resulting in suppression of vowel sounds (which are the loudest part of syllables), and substitution of physical effort in the mouth or larynx. Accordingly, Valsalva Stuttering Therapy does not focus on controlling or changing one's speech, but rather on controlling the forces that interfere with speech,.
