My client base is primarily comprised of adults who have survived strokes and brain trauma, or those suffering from neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinsons and all types of dementia, as well as head and neck cancer. Individuals with other impairments are also seen. A general outline of services is listed, although is not limited to the following: *Swallowing disorders (dysphagia) are diagnosed and intervention is provided to: determine the safest diet level through guarded trials and diet adjustment, create home exercises to regain function, train and educate the client and caregivers in safe swallow practices/strategies and meal preparation, with the overall goal of reducing aspiration risk with the least restrictive diet. *Speech, language, and voice disorders are evaluated and treatment is given for dysarthria, apraxia, expressive and receptive aphasia, and voice difficulties due to neurologic involvement or head and neck surgery. Reading and writing deficits are also targeted for intervention, and augmentative and alternative communication devices created or recommended (low or high tech) for nonverbal patients, as well as training in use of voice prosthesis if appropriate. *Cognitive impairments including memory loss, problem solving/ reasoning, planning, orientation, and thought organization are evaluated and treatment is provided. Adaptive and environmental aids are created and patients and caregivers are trained in their use, such as memory books for those with Alzheimer's or other neurologic difficulties. *Hearing and visual impairments are addressed either in isolation or in conjunction with other deficits and patients and caregivers are assisted in obtaining and utilizing adaptive aids such as amplification devices, phones with special features, large print materials, or referrals are made to appropriate community resources. My treatment focuses on an individual's functional needs and abilities. Sessions are tailored to promote the best quality of life with the most realistic and attainable goals. I am compassionate and caring while having the flexibiltiy to adjust my intervention to address special issues as they arise. Counseling is provided for emotional adjustment to disability as needed using an intuitive and trusting approach. The Intensive Stuttering Therapy Program replaces your stuttered speech with a new way of talking which is incompatible with stuttering. We begin with two hours of therapy in the clinic for five consecutive days. You start this with a very slow rate of speaking during which you don't stutter from the first day of therapy. We use the Delayed Auditory Feedback (DAF) machine to help you control your speech rate. Gradually the rate is increased until it approximates normal speaking. At this point we take you off the machine and you produce stutter-reduction speech in the clinic for short periods of talking. During the last part of the program you transfer this stutter-reduction speech into speaking situations outside the clinic and at home starting with very easy speaking situations and short periods of talking and gradually moving to more difficult situations until you can talk stutter-reduction all day long. This part of the program is completed at home and is monitored by weekly phone calls with the client. Success depends upon this carefully managed follow-up program which involves at least one year of daily speaking practice. Progress is monitored by weekly phone calls from the therapist.

Parkinson’s Disease and other neurological deficits often cause faulty feedback to the brain which can result in communication that is too soft, mumbled, monotone or hoarse. Because of this, patients with Parkinson's Disease can often be difficult to understand. Our LSVT-LOUD treatment teaches Parkinson’s Disease patients techniques to improve their communication ability and perception of appropriate loudness. Dysphagia – Patients with dysphagia have difficulty swallowing and may experience pain while swallowing, making it difficult to eat. Dysphagia is caused by weak muscles in the mouth and throat and is often a result of a stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s disease. Aphasia – Aphasia causes patients to have difficulty reading, speaking, listening and writing. Aphasia is caused by damage to parts of the brain that are responsible for language. Apraxia – Patients with apraxia have difficulty speaking what he/she wants to speak. Apraxia can occur in two forms. Patients can be born with the disorder or it can develop from a stroke or head injury. Dysarthria – Patients with dysarthria may have slurred speech, a slow or rapid rate of speech, abnormal rhythm when speaking or difficulty chewing and swallowing. Dysarthria can develop from a stroke or head injury. Stuttering – Stuttering is a communication disorder that causes difficulty in fluency of speech. This includes involuntary repetitions of words, parts of words or sounds. Stuttering is also referred to as stammering. Dementia – Dementia is related to memory loss. A speech-language pathologist can help patients with dementia by using strategies to help preserve communications and cognitive function.

Each client's progress is monitored and guided by our staff and used with individuals from ages 5 years and older and also used with individuals with learning disabilities, dyslexia, autism, head injuries and hearing impairment. Mind Power Program: aims to restore impaired cognitive functioning of individuals with attention deficit, memory deficits, learning disability or brain injury. Cogmed: a computer-based program that addresses working memory, ability to recall and use information needed to accomplish a task. Earobics: a computer program which provides comprehensive training in auditory processing and related listening and reading skills. FastForWord: a computer program which, assists people to distinguish and process rapidly changing acoustic elements of speech at the rate needed for speech, language, listening and reading development. Interactive Metronome Program (IM): a computer program which provides a focused and systematic way to exercise motor planning and sequencing capacities. Learning Ears: an advanced auditory stimulation and training program, which incorporates a therapeutic listening program and specific work in ear-voice training. NeuroNet: a learning readiness program that helps students become independent learners and designed to help students develop fluency in essential reading, math, and handwriting skills. NNet programs center around 4 Key Concepts: 1. Watch and learn, then think and do. 2. Develop fluency in early reading, handwriting, and math skills. Learn to use what you know to enhance new learning. 3. Get your brain to practice what you want your brain to learn: To develop fluency, you must practice fluency. 4. Learn to self-evaluate. Center for Communication and Learning Skills offers each client a welcoming, comfortable, positive and growth-oriented environment. I started MarvelMyo & Speech after being a speech therapist in the school system and seeing how little our kids were being given appropriate services and the lack of progress compelled me to want to help families with navigating the overwhelming space that is of seeing specialists. I personally have dealt with breathing, sleep, speech and feeding issues and have experienced the frustrations of trying to address root cause for why my pains were evident. I chose the word MARVEL to represent my office because I want patients to know that they are getting the utmost of care. I am married to my sweet husband and we have a boston terrier named Mahomie of whom was given the namesake after none other than Patrick Mahomes of the Chiefs! I am a board certified Speech-Language Pathologist, Feeding Specialist, and Certified Oromyofunctional Therapist through the Academy of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy. I am a four-time award American Speech-Language Hearing Association winner for continued education beyond 200 hours. I hold my Clinical Certification of Competence through the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association and am a licensed and registered member of the Texas Speech-Language and Hearing Association. I am currently working on my doctorate to further help patients suffering from tongue ties and mouth breathing habits to hopefully increase open communication about the topics and improve patient health. She is trained in PROMPT (Prompts for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets), which focuses on the motor movement for forming sounds into words. She has also taken coursework through the International Association of Oromyofunctional Therapy (IAOM), The Breathe Institute with Sarah Hornsby, Orofacial Myology Training for Sandra Holtzman (QOM certification track), SimonSaysSpeech, and the Chrysalis TOTS training to address oromyofunctional disorders and how to recognize tongue/lip/cheek tethers. She is on-track to become a Certified Lactation Consultant (CLC) through the Center for Breastfeeding. Katelyn is also trained in Augmentative and Alternative Communication devices (AAC) such as switches, Dynavox, Proloquo2Go app on the iPad, and the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS). Katelyn has a passion for all patients to reach their full potential in life, with speech and language, feeding, and with their overall health. Her coordinated efforts with dentists, orthodontists, ENTs, physical therapists, and chiropractors around the DFW area are to holistically address the needs of patients at any age.
