Services: ** TELETHERAPY AVAILABLE ** LSVT-LOUD (Speech treatment for Parkinson's Disease patients):We provide evaluation and treatment for Parkinson’s Disease related communication deficits. Parkinson’s Disease and other neurological deficits often cause faulty feedback to the brain which can result in communication that is too soft, mumbled, monotone or hoarse. Because of this, patients with Parkinson's Disease can often be difficult to understand. Our LSVT-LOUD treatment teaches Parkinson’s Disease patients techniques to improve their communication ability and perception of appropriate loudness. Dysphagia – Patients with dysphagia have difficulty swallowing and may experience pain while swallowing, making it difficult to eat. Dysphagia is caused by weak muscles in the mouth and throat and is often a result of a stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s disease. Aphasia – Aphasia causes patients to have difficulty reading, speaking, listening and writing. Aphasia is caused by damage to parts of the brain that are responsible for language. Apraxia – Patients with apraxia have difficulty speaking what he/she wants to speak. Apraxia can occur in two forms. Patients can be born with the disorder or it can develop from a stroke or head injury. Dysarthria – Patients with dysarthria may have slurred speech, a slow or rapid rate of speech, abnormal rhythm when speaking or difficulty chewing and swallowing. Dysarthria can develop from a stroke or head injury. Stuttering – Stuttering is a communication disorder that causes difficulty in fluency of speech. This includes involuntary repetitions of words, parts of words or sounds. Stuttering is also referred to as stammering. Dementia – Dementia is related to memory loss. A speech-language pathologist can help patients with dementia by using strategies to help preserve communications and cognitive function.

Speech Therapy and Evaluations,
Reading, Writing, Tutoring
Evaluations Speech TLC conducts evaluations in the child’s natural environment (home, school, library) which maximizes their comfort and performance. Using standardized tests, oral language samples, and written language samples, the clinician pinpoints the areas of receptive or expressive weakness and develops goals specific to the individual child. When evaluating persons with Autism, a dynamic assessment (a method that seeks to identify an individual’s skills as well as learning potential) might be used instead of standardized testing instruments. Evaluations are conducted in the following areas: Articulation – including Apraxia and Phonological Disorders Voice Fluency Receptive Language (oral) Expressive Language (oral and written) Speech Therapy Speech therapy helps children to speak more clearly by eradicating misarticulations, reducing dysfluencies (stuttering), or improving vocal health to diminish vocal nodules. Articulation Disorders – Speech sound misarticulations Phonological disorders – a type of articulation disorder that involves patterns of sound errors such as omitting sounds from the beginning or end of words, moving sounds made in the back of the mouth to the front, cluster reduction, or deleting syllables from words. Childhood Apraxia of Speech – a motor speech disorder where the child knows what he wants to say and the brain sends the signal, but the articulators have difficulty coordinating the necessary movements. Fluency Disorders (Stuttering) – speech sound repetitions, word repetitions, or blocks impeding the flow of communication. Voice Disorders (Vocal nodules) – calluses on the vocal folds caused by vocal abuse. Language Therapy Language therapy helps students to better understand (receptive language) spoken and written language as well as to communicate effectively (expressive language). Specific strategies and therapy techniques are employed depending on the child’s unique areas of weakness. Reading Tutoring SPIRE Reading Program – Systematic, sequential, phonetic reading program based on Orton Gillingham method Kansas University Learning Strategies – Reading Comprehension Strategies: Paraphrasing –Main idea and details, Self-Questioning – Asking questions and locating the answers within the text, Visual Imagery- Making pictures in your mind while reading, Inferencing- Digging deep and using clues to make meaning of text. LINCS Vocabulary Strategy – vocabulary card strategy Writing Tutoring Writing tutoring improves a student’s ability to communicate effectively through written expression. Our tutoring moves students along the continuum of sentence writing through multi-paragraph essays. The University of Kansas Writing Strategies, considered the gold standard to teaching writing, remediate writing difficulties and focus on independence. Students memorize graphic organizers and “unpack” the correct organizer depending on type of writing assignment. Fundamentals in Sentence Writing – students learn to write simple sentences with one or two subjects and one or two verbs; focus on action verbs, helping verbs, prepositions, and varying vocabulary. Proficiency in Sentence Writing – students master compound and complex sentences by memorizing coordinating and subordinating conjunctions. Paragraph Writing Strategy – clients utilize a memorized graphic organizer prior to writing an 8 sentence paragraph containing a topic sentence, 6 detail sentences, and a concluding sentence; Types of Paragraphs: Narrative, Step-by-Step, Descriptive, Expository, Compare/Contrast. Theme Writing Strategy (5 paragraph essay) – students memorize a graphic organizer that helps them prewrite a thesis statement, introductory paragraph, body paragraphs, and concluding paragraph. The overall focus of this strategy is independence in writing, preparing the student for high school and college writing assignments. Contact Us Today! © 2022 Speech TLC

Engage in Life with Confidence
Did you know that around 20% of preschoolers stutter at some point? Most of them establish fluent speech without any special help, but about 20-25% of them continue to stutter throughout their lives. I am an ASHA-certified speech-language pathologist serving Scottsdale and the greater Phoenix area. I specialize in treating individuals who stutter across the life span and am a Board Certified Specialist in fluency disorders. Seeing your toddler or preschooler begin to stutter can be a scary experience for a parent. While some children will naturally "outgrow" early childhood disfluency, we are not able to predict which children might continue to be persistent stutterers. Risk factors such as how old the child is when he began to stutter, how long he has been stuttering, and being a boy can all influence the outcome. There is much that can be done to reverse stuttering in the early years by helping parents learn tools for facilitating fluency and for minimizing fluency disruptors. Therapy for school-aged children, including those in the early grades, is direct and usually involves dealing with the uncomfortable feelings about talking and stuttering that develop in addition to the stuttered speech itself. Therapy for adults, including those of retirement age, usually focuses on identifying and addressing quality of life issues and/or specific communication goals, such as managing a job interview, improving social communication, or giving a presentation. Cluttering is another fluency disorder that can make speech difficult. People who clutter seem to talk too fast. They sometimes "slur" their words, and they may have too many pauses or hesitations in their speech. They may start a sentence three or more different ways before they finally stick it out to the end. Their speech can be hard to understand or to follow even though they are able to produce all the speech sounds accurately. Most people who clutter also stutter, but not all. Therapy for cluttering involves identifying the factors that interfere with speech and learning new patterns. I am also dedicated to working with school-aged children with language-based learning disorders such as Learning Disabilities, Dyslexia, and Auditory Processing Disorders (APD) as well as related disorders such as ADD/ADHD. Reading and writing use the same base knowledge of word learning, syntax, and narrative as speaking and listening. Often, children who struggle with reading and writing were slow to start talking or had speech that was hard to understand. Working with both modalities--oral and written language--improves the basic language system and results in more fluent oral reading, better comprehension, more interesting conversations, and better organized stories and reports. Therapy involves all of these modalities to address difficulties with phonological awareness, spelling, sentence structure, and story organization. In addition to providing evaluations and therapy in my private practice, I also conduct Independent Educational Evaluations. I am a frequent presenter at national and state conferences and conventions as well as school districts, private practices, and mothers' groups! Please contact me for more information about these services.
