Personalized Speech Therapy
Mobile Private Practice
I help frustrated people break down barriers to better communication, learning, and thinking so that they can lead fulfilling, independent lives. Mobile private practice and teletherapy allow me to provide personalized, encouraging, and effective therapy services to people in a way that meets them where they are. No worksheets, flashcards, etc. (unless you like those things!). I specialize in helping people experiencing difficulty with speaking, listening, reading, writing, attention/concentration, memory, organization, planning, and executive functions (the "boss" functions of the brain that help you get things done). I have a special place in my heart for people living with dementia and their families. While I cannot reverse or cure the cognitive decline that comes with dementia, I can help find ways to live well at each stage, reduce daily frustrations, and improve independence. Many people I work with have tried speech therapy in the past but found they did not have input into what they were doing, or their goals didn't meet their actual needs. So they left frustrated and without much progress. My approach focuses on shared goal-building and working together at a level that is challenging--but not impossible--so that you can see and feel the benefit of what you're doing.

Neurofeedback is direct training of brain function, by which the brain learns to function more efficiently. We observe the brain in action from moment to moment. We show that information back to the person. And we reward the brain for changing its own activity to more appropriate patterns. This is a gradual learning process. It applies to any aspect of brain function that we can measure. Neurofeedback is also called EEG Biofeedback, because it is based on electrical brain activity, the electroencephalogram, or EEG. Neurofeedback is training in self-regulation. It is simply biofeedback applied to the brain directly. Self-regulation is a necessary part of good brain function. Self-regulation training allows the system (the central nervous system) to function better. Neurofeedback addresses problems of brain dis-regulation. Center For Speech Language Intervention
Speech-Language Pathologist
Chapel Hill, NC 27517
Experienced
I am owner/therapist of The Center for Speech Language Intervention. I have experience in schools but find that one on one intervention is the most productive way to provide optimal services for the client. Developing a trusting relationship with high expectations is core to reaching a child so we can work together on target goals. We must accept where the child begins and celebrate that next step, then the next and the next. I have worked with children from birth to high school in areas including: autism (including Aspergers), childhood apraxia of speech, receptive and expressive language delays and disabilities, processing disorders, stuttering, genetic disorders, articulation and phonological process disorders, phonemic awareness and reading comprehension deficits. Another aspect of communication intervention is to address psychosocial/behavioral issues that may accompany communication challenges. While we want to use research based interventions such as Interactive Metronome which accesses neuroplasticity to support therapeutic goals, there is also an organic process of being flexible in engaging with your child. Your child's needs are unique and discovering what works best is part of that process. References and recommendations available.

Speech & Swallowing Therapy
We solve communication puzzles
My name is Mark Higginson. My wife and I are both speech therapists, and natives of Tucson, Arizona (and our office is right by an Eegees!). We both became speech therapists because of our enthusiasm for studying language and love of helping other people. Given the vital role communication plays in our enjoyment and success in life, what better way to help others than to strengthen or rebuild communication abilities? It's what we love to do! We thrive off of seeing our clients make progress and meet their personal communication goals. Having worked in various medical settings, we decided to begin our own private clinic in order to "do things our own way," i.e. give ourselves the freedom to provide the level of quality service and respect we expect to receive when we go to any medical appointment. We specialize in communication and swallowing disorders related to neurological damage or disease, but treat many other areas too, for both adults and children. We give our patients the time they deserve in therapy, and focus on patient empowerment and independence through thorough education. Bring us your communication puzzles...and we'll solve them together!
