Dysphagia – Patients with dysphagia have difficulty swallowing and may experience pain while swallowing, making it difficult to eat. Aphasia – Aphasia causes patients to have difficulty reading, speaking, listening and writing. Aphasia is caused by damage to parts of the brain that are responsible for language. Apraxia – Patients with apraxia have difficulty speaking what he/she wants to speak. Apraxia can occur in two forms. Patients can be born with the disorder or it can develop from a stroke or head injury. Dysarthria – Patients with dysarthria may have slurred speech, a slow or rapid rate of speech, abnormal rhythm when speaking or difficulty chewing and swallowing. Dysarthria can develop from a stroke or head injury. Stuttering – Stuttering is a communication disorder that causes difficulty in fluency of speech. This includes involuntary repetitions of words, parts of words or sounds. Stuttering is also referred to as stammering. Dementia – Dementia is related to memory loss.
