Our LSVT-LOUD treatment teaches Parkinson’s Disease patients techniques to improve their communication ability and perception of appropriate loudness. Dysphagia – Patients with dysphagia have difficulty swallowing and may experience pain while swallowing, making it difficult to eat. Dysphagia is caused by weak muscles in the mouth and throat and is often a result of a stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s disease. Aphasia – Aphasia causes patients to have difficulty reading, speaking, listening and writing. Aphasia is caused by damage to parts of the brain that are responsible for language. Apraxia – Patients with apraxia have difficulty speaking what he/she wants to speak. Apraxia can occur in two forms. Patients can be born with the disorder or it can develop from a stroke or head injury. Dysarthria – Patients with dysarthria may have slurred speech, a slow or rapid rate of speech, abnormal rhythm when speaking or difficulty chewing and swallowing. Dysarthria can develop from a stroke or head injury. Stuttering – Stuttering is a communication disorder that causes difficulty in fluency of speech. This includes involuntary repetitions of words, parts of words or sounds. Stuttering is also referred to as stammering. Dementia – Dementia is related to memory loss. My name is Mark Higginson. My wife and I are both speech therapists, and natives of Tucson, Arizona (and our office is right by an Eegees!). We both became speech therapists because of our enthusiasm for studying language and love of helping other people. Given the vital role communication plays in our enjoyment and success in life, what better way to help others than to strengthen or rebuild communication abilities? It's what we love to do! We thrive off of seeing our clients make progress and meet their personal communication goals. Having worked in various medical settings, we decided to begin our own private clinic in order to "do things our own way," i.e. give ourselves the freedom to provide the level of quality service and respect we expect to receive when we go to any medical appointment. We specialize in communication and swallowing disorders related to neurological damage or disease, but treat many other areas too, for both adults and children. We give our patients the time they deserve in therapy, and focus on patient empowerment and independence through thorough education. In addition to treating the more traditional areas of language, literacy, fluency, voice and academic issues, I’m a recognized expert in orofacial myofunctional disorders, speech disorders, feeding and swallowing disorders, and airway disorders. I'm trained in PROMPT, Beckman, and Buteyko, I’m a Certified Orofacial Myologist, and a Certified Breast Feeding Specialist. My comprehensive functional assessments take a wholistic approach when considering patient symptoms which often provides a more thorough baseline and more accurate diagnosis leading to better therapeutic outcomes. Katie has been qualified and practising as a paediatric Speech and Language Therapist since 1999. She has a broad range and depth of experience from her work in Community clinics, Schools and Nurseries, Pre-school Language Units, Locum therapy work and an exciting project being employed by 12 Mainstream Schools to oversee the staff delivering the therapy. Katie started her independent practise in 2007, alongside NHS work in Brighton and then in Cambridge. Since then Katie relocated to Olney and has worked in Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire and Buckinghamshire. Katie's therapy is effective and always in partnership with the family of the child and the Nursery or School setting, as appropriate.
